You can participate!

Free food, free food, free food and some other things, like learning design and solving cases!

Dash Design Hackathon is an event for you. Here, you’ll get to team up with brilliant minds from different fields and solve real world problems using design thinking methods for 48 hours. At the end, you’ll pitch your ideas together to the jury - may the best teams win!

No prior knowledge in design is required - we’re looking for creative people with varied backgrounds. We’ll introduce you to the design thinking world and form teams for you, making sure each team is rich in diversity. You can be a student or a graduate.

If you’re above the age of 18, curious about design, love developing something new, are fascinated by startups, or just find our concept interesting and want to see how far your wings can take you - Dash is for you.

And the best news? The entire event, including the actual hacking, company excursions, prep-event, keynote speakers, mentoring of design experts, delicious meals, sponsor products, and afterparty are completely free of charge.

Application period starts in September. So now, follow us on our social media and keep an eye out on our webpage and you'll be one of the early applicants. You can find our contact information at the end of this page.

We’re not the only ones excited of the event. Here’s what our previous design hackathon participants have to say:

“The whole event is superb - listening to the keynote speakers, the location of the venue, the snacks and drinks and the friendly dashers."
“Everything was so smooth. Whatever we needed, we could find someone and got some help."
“The atmosphere in the event really encourages you to go out and think of something crazy. That kind of a atmosphere can be hard to pull off, but you guys have definitely captured it."

Do I need prior experience?

No. The core idea of Dash is to try new things and learn. If you have any interest to see how Dash is like, go and apply once the application period begins.

How does COVID-19 affect Dash Design Hackathon?

We are organizing the whole thing as a hybrid hackathon! So you have opportunities of joining fully online, or dropping into one of our mini-hubs around Helsinki! We limit the amount of people in a hub to absolute minimum, still bringing the Dash experience known from previous years. So expect parts of the show online, with the vital parts of your experience being right there in the hub - food, mentors and teams working on the same case to bond. Our priority is to ensure a safe experience for all of our participants, partners and volunteers attending the venue.

Hand sanitizer will be provided everywhere in the space. In the venue, teams will be working separately. If you are feeling any symptoms of cold or fatigue, please stay home.

We’ll keep an eye on how the situation evolves globally and in Finland, and will keep you up to date accordingly.

Do I need to be a design student or a student in Aalto?

No. Everyone interested in design is warmly welcome to apply!

Can I come without a group / can I have a group?

Once getting accepted, you will attend Dash individually. The groups will be formed so that they are equally diverse.

Is there an age limit?

Yes, all participants have to be 18 or older.

I’m really bad at drawing and designing stuff, so I guess this isn’t for me?

This is just for you! Dash is for trying new things and learning, as well as working with people who have different skillsets. You bring your own perspective into a creative problem solving case, and how these views clash and inspire others is the key part of Dash.

Where will I sleep?

Due to the uncertain situation regarding the pandemic, we advise everyone to find their own place for accommodation. If you need help finding a place to stay at, you can contact us at

Do I need to bring my own food?

No, Dash will take care of you and make sure that you’ll stay full makes breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack

Are there language requirements?

Dash is an international event and English will be the main language.

How can I get to the venue?

Venues will be selected easy accessibility in mind! Stay tuned.
